Holiday Cooking with Reading Arizona, Part 1

Thanksgiving blog image

This holiday season, why not try something different and have an authentic Southwestern holiday dinner with the family? This year Reading Arizona is sharing authentic Southwestern recipes for the holidays that have been used throughout Arizona since 1911. We hope you enjoy these authentic recipes and continue to watch for more. From all of us at the Digital Arizona Library (DAZL) and Arizona State Library, we wish you a happy holiday season!

Cranberry Pie

  • ½ cup of Sugar
  • ½ cup Corn Starch
  • 1 cup Water
  • ½ cup Molasses
  • 1 quart Cranberries, finely chopped
  • ½ teaspoon Salt

Mix corn starch, sugar, and water and bring to a boil. Then add molasses, cranberries and salt. This makes enough filling for two pies with upper and lower crusts.

Never Fail Pie Crust

  • 3 cups Flour
  • ½ teaspoon Baking Powder
  • ½ cup Lard
  • ½ cup Butter
  • ½ cup Ice Water
  • Pinch Salt

Mix dry ingredients and then add water. Mix and roll out. Double over and roll several times as this makes the dough flaky.
